Summer staff members are crucial to fulfilling Camp John Marc’s mission of providing high-quality camping experiences for children with chronic illnesses and physical challenges.

Working at Camp John Marc is a lot of fun. There are water wars, campouts, silly songs and of course campers, but it is also a challenging experience that requires hard work, flexibility, willingness to be a team player, and responsibility. All staff members should enjoy working with children, but because of diverse programming needs, individuals hired for summer staff positions will have a wide variety of skills, backgrounds, and academic or career interests.

What to Expect as a Camp John Marc Summer Staff Member

Each week, Camp John Marc summer staff members will:

• Host a Cabin. Each summer staff member is partnered with a cabin of 5-7 campers and 3 volunteer counselors every week. During this time, hosts build relationships with the campers in their cabin by sharing meals, participating in evening activities together, and spending quality time playing games and hanging out in the cabin.
• Lead an Activity. The Camp John Marc activities that staff lead, oversee, or facilitate are Archery, Arts & Crafts, Fishing, Horses, Lake Canoeing/Kayaking, Nature, Swimming, Pottery, the Ropes Challenge Course, and Sports & Games. Staff members typically move between 2-3 activity areas throughout the course of the summer. Some activity areas require certification which can be obtained during training programs held prior to Staff Training.
• Lead a Project. Daily Projects are an important part of the Camp John Marc program. They help individualize the camp experience while developing skills in a particular hobby or interest. Project groups meet for just over an hour every day. The curriculum or project, which is created by the summer staff project leader, advances each day. Some projects examples include American Girl Dolls, Cooking, Basketball, Fishing, Ukulele, Swim Lessons, Wheelchair Hockey, and more!

Compensation and Time Off. Summer Salary starts at $250 per week (room/board are included). Every summer staff member gets one paid week off and five long weekends off. Additionally, staff members have off every Friday afternoon until Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Staff Lodging. Staff members live in comfortable, air-conditioned, duplex-style lodging. Each side of the lodge houses four staff members and has two bedrooms, one large bathroom, a living area, washing machine and dryer, and kitchenette.
 

Criteria for Summer Staff

• be at least 18 years old
• be legally eligible for employment in the United States
• be able to safely lift 50 lbs. (with/without reasonable accommodation)
• complete a comprehensive medical history and required immunization forms (provided after application)
• have completed one year of college or comparable life experience by the start of the summer season
• submit a criminal background check prior (provided after application)
• be able to commit to work from mid-May through early-August (staff training and 11 weeks of summer camps)

If accepted, summer staff will be subject to a random drug test during the summer season.

Application Process

We begin accepting summer staff applications November 1st. After that time, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Once your application has been received and reviewed, we will let you know if you have been selected for an interview. We respect the fact that many of our applicants need to make decisions about summer jobs as early as January or February. Because of this, we try our best to make our final hiring decisions in a prompt manner.
