Staff members are crucial to fulfilling Camp John Marc’s mission of providing high-quality camping experiences for children with chronic illnesses and physical challenges.
Working at Camp John Marc is a wonderful experience that requires hard work, flexibility, willingness to be a team player, responsibility to self and others, and most importantly, must enjoy working with children. Staff members have a wide variety of skills, backgrounds, and academic/career interests.
What to Expect: Each week, staff members will:- Host a Cabin. Each week staff members are partnered with a cabin to serve as host to 7 campers and 3 volunteer counselors while building relationships in sharing meals, evening activities together, and spending quality time playing games and in the cabin. At the end of the day, staff will return to their own separate staff lodging.
- Lead an Activity. Staff members lead activity areas: Archery, Arts & Crafts, Fishing, Horses, Lake Canoeing/Kayaking, Nature, Swimming, Pottery, the Ropes Challenge Course, and Sports & Games. Staff can expect to approximately 4 hours per day leading an activity, 4 days per week. Typically staff members move between 2-3 activity areas during the summer. Some activity areas require certification (obtained during staff training).
- Lead a Project. Daily Projects are an important part of the program as they individualize the camp experience by developing skills/hobbies. Project groups build skills each day as they go through the curriculum created by the staff member. Some projects examples include American Girl Dolls, Cooking, Basketball, Fishing, Ukulele, Wheelchair Hockey, and other skill sets brought to camp by our very own staff! Projects are 1 hour and 10 minutes of programming 4 days per week.
- Facilitate Evening Activities. In addition to daily camp activities, staff and campers will get to participate in evening activities, including kicking off camp with a theme night, cooking out over an open fire, and sleeping under the stars for one night each of the first 3 weeks of camp (3 nights total).
Compensation and Time Off. Summer Salary begins at $375 per week (room/board are included). Summer staff can expect to work from 10:30 on Sundays to Friday afternoon. Additionally, each staff member will work 5 weekends during the summer season. All summer staff receive a paid week off.
